Research Question:
How do high school students’ subgroup makeup (i.e., Race/ethnicity, Male vs. Female, economically disadvantaged, Limited English, Migrant status, Disability status, and Homelessness) and mean test scores in math and reading differ among states/regions?
- Design choices:
- Color-blind friendly palette
- faceted by subgroup
- removed legend for clarity
- Did not add state names to avoid cognitive overload
- Findings: Homeless students have overall lower proficiency across math and reading while white students have the highest proficiency.
- Prior versions:
- I wanted the color palette to show contrast of subgroups so I used the viridis palette to show proficient test scores.
- I had planned to facet by subgroup in the so that was the first design choice I made in the data wrangling phase.
- I added breaks to show cut-offs for percentages and re-labeled the legend
- I made aesthetic changes to remove state outlines
